How to Stay Entertained on a Long Train Journey

Long train rides can be a nice break from the rush of everyday life, forcing you to unwind and take some time for yourself. However, if you're not prepared, they can start to feel like they drag on forever, with you staring out the window or mindlessly scrolling on your phone. To make the most of the time and actually enjoy the ride, it's a good idea to bring along a mix of things to keep you entertained.

Pack a good book or e-reader

Taking your favourite book you just haven’t had the time to fully get stuck into just yet is the perfect way to utilise your train time. If you prefer to travel light, an e-reader is an excellent option. It holds multiple books at once, so you’ll never run out of material, and it’s perfect for browsing through different genres to match your mood.

On a long journey, you’ll find that sinking into a gripping story can make the hours seem to fly by. As an added bonus, some e-readers have adjustable lighting, meaning you can read at any time, day or night.

Create a travel playlist or podcast lineup

Before you board, take some time to curate a playlist for the journey. Include a mix of your favourite songs, relaxing tunes, and perhaps some new music to discover along the way.

Podcasts are also a great option that offers entertainment and education. Choose from a wide variety of topics—true crime, personal development, comedy, or even travel stories—that suit your interests. Listening to something thought-provoking or humorous can make the time pass quickly and keep you engaged for hours.

Watch movies or download TV shows

If you're in the mood to unwind with something visual, consider watching a movie or a few episodes of your favourite TV show. Download them in advance to avoid relying on the train’s Wi-Fi, which can be spotty. Whether you’re revisiting old classics or catching up on the latest shows, having a selection ready will keep you entertained throughout the journey.

Play games to pass the time

When you want something that feels more interactive, games are a great choice. Whether it’s a puzzle app on your phone, a trivia challenge, or even a casual game like Sudoku, games are a simple way to stay occupied.

Just pick games that are easy to start and stop, so you can stay entertained without losing track of time. For instance, when using a bingo app you can play solo or with others, adding a bit of friendly competition. Many apps also offer cool features and rewards, making the game more exciting.

Take in the scenery and relax

Sometimes, the best way to enjoy a long train journey is simply by looking out the window. Whether you’re passing through rolling countryside, coastal views, or bustling towns, the changing scenery offers a calming and natural form of entertainment.

Don’t feel pressured to constantly fill every moment with activity. A long train journey doesn’t have to be a test of endurance. By incorporating a variety of activities and taking time to embrace the experience, you can transform what might seem like idle hours into a series of enjoyable moments.
