What Is Your Couch Made Of? The Materials Hiding in Plain Sight

A couch is one of the largest objects we bring into our homes, yet most of us shop for it as though it were only a silhouette and a fabric swatch. We compare color, depth, softness, and price. We rarely ask what is inside the cushions, what holds the frame together, or what was added to make the upholstery resist stains.

Those hidden layers influence how a couch feels after five years, what it releases into the air when new, how easily it can be repaired, and where it may end up when it is no longer wanted. Understanding them doesn’t require finding one “perfect” sofa. It means learning to ask better questions.

A Couch Is a Layered Object

Most upholstered couches contain four main systems: a structural frame, suspension, cushioning, and upholstery. Adhesives, finishes, dyes, barrier materials, and hardware connect them. A product described simply as ‘wood and fabric’ may also contain composite wood, foam, batting, springs, glues, and finishes.

Some furniture makers are beginning to make those layers easier to see. The cloud-style couches at www.soulfa.com, for example, are described in terms of kiln-dried oak construction, high-density foam, washable covers, and fabrics the company states are made without formaldehyde or added flame retardants.

The broader lesson isn’t that every couch should be constructed in the same way. A brand must be able to explain what each layer contains, what purpose it serves, and how it affects the finished product.

Start With the Frame

The frame determines whether a couch remains stable or begins to creak, twist, and sag. Solid hardwood and high-quality plywood can both perform well when joints are properly reinforced. Particleboard and medium-density fiberboard can be suitable for certain components, but buyers should understand where and how they are used.

Composite wood also deserves attention because resins used in some products can emit formaldehyde. In the United States, hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard, and finished goods containing these materials must comply with federal formaldehyde-emission standards under TSCA Title VI.

Ask the retailer to identify the frame material rather than accepting a broad phrase such as “wood construction". It is also worth asking how the joints are made, whether load-bearing areas are reinforced, and whether structural repairs are possible.

Foam Determines More Than Softness

Most modern couch cushions use polyurethane foam, sometimes layered with fiber, feathers, memory foam, or latex. Density and construction affect support and durability, while firmness describes how hard or soft the cushion initially feels. A soft cushion isn’t necessarily low quality, and a firm cushion isn’t automatically durable.

Foam may also contain functional additives. A 2016 study screening 1,141 polyurethane-foam samples from consumer products detected flame-retardant chemicals in 52% of the samples overall. However, the researchers also observed a decline in their detection in furniture purchased after changes to flammability standards.

Current U.S. upholstered-furniture regulations focus on resistance to smoldering ignition. A couch can comply through its cover fabric, barrier material, filling materials, or a combination of components. A flammability-compliance label doesn’t, by itself, reveal whether chemical flame retardants were intentionally added, so that remains a separate question for the manufacturer.

The Fabric May Carry More Than Color

Upholstery must survive abrasion, sunlight, body oils, spills, pets, and repeated cleaning. Fiber content alone, therefore, doesn’t tell the whole story. Cotton, linen, wool, polyester, nylon, leather, and blended textiles each involve trade-offs in durability, maintenance, sourcing, and eventual disposal.

Performance treatments deserve particular scrutiny. PFAS have been used in textile manufacturing to provide properties such as water and soil repellency, and the EPA has also addressed textile-related PFAS concerns in its work on effluent guidelines and broader chemical regulation.

“Stain-resistant” should therefore prompt a follow-up question: How is that resistance achieved? A manufacturer may be able to confirm whether a fabric is produced without intentionally added PFAS or explain the alternative technology being used.

Washability can also extend the useful life of a couch. Check whether the entire cover is removable, which pieces can be machine-washed, and whether replacement covers will remain available. “Easy-clean” may refer only to spot cleaning, while a genuinely removable cover offers more flexibility after years of everyday use.

What Holds It Together Matters

Adhesives, coatings, and finishes are easy to overlook because they rarely appear in product photography. They can, however, contribute to the familiar “new furniture” smell.

The EPA explains that volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are “emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids". Furnishings, adhesives, finishes, and other household products can be indoor sources. The possible effects vary significantly according to the specific chemical, concentration, and length of exposure.

Odor isn’t a reliable safety test. Some VOCs have little or no noticeable smell, while a noticeable odor doesn’t automatically indicate a dangerous exposure.

Ask whether the adhesives are water-based or low-emitting, whether the completed couch has undergone emissions testing, and what ventilation the manufacturer recommends after delivery. These questions are particularly useful when furnishing nurseries, bedrooms, or smaller homes with limited airflow.

Certifications Help, but They Have Limits

Third-party certifications can make material claims easier to evaluate, but only when you understand what each one covers.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 applies to tested textiles and related components, including upholstery materials, and sets requirements for specified substances that may be harmful during normal use. CertiPUR-US applies specifically to flexible polyurethane foam and includes restrictions on selected chemicals and limits for certain emissions. GREENGUARD certification focuses on chemical emissions from completed products and materials.

No single label proves that an entire couch is organic, non-toxic, ethically manufactured, or environmentally perfect. A certified fabric doesn’t automatically certify the frame, foam, glue, or completed sofa.

Look for a valid certificate, confirm which component it covers, and be cautious when a company stretches a narrow certification into a much broader marketing claim.

Longevity Is a Materials Issue

Keeping a couch in use longer isn’t simply a matter of choosing the heaviest frame. Longevity also depends on whether cushions can be replaced, covers can be cleaned or changed, modules can be rearranged, and damaged components can be repaired. Durability without maintainability can still lead to premature disposal.

Before buying, read the warranty terms rather than relying on the headline number. Find out which components are covered, what is excluded, whether labor and transportation are included, and whether the company expects to support the design years from now.

A Smarter Couch-Buying Checklist

Before committing, ask:

  • What is the frame made from, including any composite wood?

  • What are the cushion layers, foam density, and fill materials?

  • Are flame retardants intentionally added?

  • What is the upholstery’s full fiber composition?

  • How is stain resistance achieved?

  • Is the fabric made without intentionally added PFAS?

  • Which covers are removable, washable, and replaceable?

  • Has the completed couch been tested for chemical emissions?

  • Can individual cushions, covers, or modules be repaired or replaced?

  • What exactly does the warranty cover?

Conclusion

A couch isn’t one material. It is an ecosystem of wood, foam, fabric, hardware, adhesives, and finishes designed to work together. The most responsible choice will vary according to the household, budget, climate, and lifestyle, but the decision becomes easier when those materials are visible.

Look beyond the swatch. Ask what supports the seat, what gives the fabric its performance, what certifications actually cover, and how the couch can be maintained over time.
