Brooke Law Reminds Us About The True Meaning of Christmas

London-born British singer and songwriter, Brooke Law, is an electrifying artist with a heart. She has written with leading producers who have worked with Ellie Goulding, Dua Lipa, and Lana Del Ray. In 2019, she was selected by BBC Asian Network and BBC Music Introducing Essex as one of their ‘Artist to Watch’. Her new single for Christmas 2020, “Home,” is a highly emotive song that poignantly conveys the sadness of finding yourself apart from a loved one at Christmas. It also sheds light on the homeless predicament impacted by 320,000 people in the UK. 100% of the proceeds of her new single will go to the UK Charity, Crisis. Brooke hopes that her song will not only reach out emotionally to those in need but also provide practical help through donations. It is from this bedrock of family ‘unity-through-diversity’, strength, and positive action that motivates Brooke to express her values and beliefs through her music. Please read our interview with Brooke Law to learn more about her and her new single, “Home.”

Where are you based?
I grew up and am still based in North London

What inspired you to get into music and writing?
I've always been a very passionate and sensitive person. I realised writing music allowed me to get out how I was feeling it made me feel strong about it.

Where do you get your inspirations from?
People inspire me every day, especially those I know and really care about.

You have a lot of really passionate music. Jejune especially loves the strong feminist empowerment in many of your songs, including “Fight Like A Mother” and “Hidden.” Can you tell us a little bit about why you feel this is important to bring into your music?
I’m not a mother, but I know being a mother is the hardest ‘job’ in the world. No one is taught how to raise someone and everyday mothers are making choices for their kids with all their heart and power. If women were recognized more, maybe there would be equality within the sexes.

“Hidden” is a really special song, released on International Women's Day, highlighting the “hidden heroes”, aka women. What inspired this song?
The song was inspired by the film, Hidden Figures: Based on a true story of three African-American women in the 1960s. Despite facing significant racism and sexism, they managed to make a significant contribution to the NASA space programme - and their work continues to make an impact today. Women are struggling all over the world for their right to have equal opportunities and continue to make significant contributions to the world we live in today. I wanted to say thank you to our hidden heroes with “Hidden.”

Is that actually your mom in the music video?
Ha, yes she comes to all my music videos and tries to get in on them.

Congrats on your new single, “Home”, can you tell us a little bit about this song and what inspired it?
This whole year people have had to be apart from those they love, lives have been taken and people have been locked down in different places. “Home” is about just wanting your loved one to come back home for Christmas.

Jejune loves that 100% of the proceeds are going to the UK charity, Crisis. Can you tell us a little bit about this organization and what made you choose to partner with them?
Christmas is always a hard time for those that are homeless. Being at home in the warmth with my family is what makes Christmas for me, which is why I wanted to donate the song to Crisis and raise awareness about homelessness.

The homeless crisis in the UK is very serious and only increasing with covid. What drew you to give a voice to this issue?
Covid has been a really lonely time for so many people, living on your own and not being able to see anyone is really hard. I can't imagine what it is like to not even have a home or a bed to feel safe in.

Home is a holiday song about wanting to see the people you love. The issue right now being that many people are not seeing loved ones because of the pandemic. Will you be missing some people this year for the holidays?
My sister works in Lebanon and it's been the best news to know she'll be able to fly home for Christmas. I lost my grandad at the beginning of the pandemic and miss him everyday… for me, Christmas is going to be an opportunity to be with my family and really value our time together.

How are you staying positive during shelter in place?
I think you mean lockdown? Since Covid, I have become a Nursery practitioner so I have been working with children every day and I am honestly learning to see the magic in the small stuff. I obviously still play music whenever I can and use it as my therapy.

What is your motto in life?
Be yourself.
