Musical Duo CA in LA Encourage Women in Media to 'Have The Audacity' and 'Take Up Space'
CA in LA have been friends and collaborators since 2012, and always found a connection to one another through their passion for all things media. Whether it be film or music, they derive their greatest joy from creating and working together creatively. In an industry where standing up for yourself and your visions as a woman can be very difficult, this team wants to remind other women to find solace and comfort in their female friendships and peers. Be on the look out for their new single “Waking Up” that drops at the end of August.
Where are you from?
Hi! We’re originally from Columbia, Maryland.
How has your hometown influenced yourself and your art?
We spent a lot of time in Baltimore, where quirky, vibrant art was encouraged. Baltimore is home to over 250 art murals and was a hub for indie film. We were always surrounded by opportunities to create, which helped us never lose touch with the playful storytellers at the root of our work.
How long have you two known each other and been friends?
We met in 2012, working at a Ruby Tuesday in Maryland. We started working on films and music together in 2013, moved to LA together in 2017 and have been inseparable since day 1.
What inspired you to get into music even though you mentioned that your first ambition was filmmaking?
From church choirs to bands, music has been a huge part of our lives. We initially became friends over film, but quickly started singing together once we realized our musical tastes aligned.
At first, it was recording ourselves for YouTube videos, but in 2016, we got a gig singing music 2x a week for four hours at the restaurant we served tables at. Realizing we could fund our film by playing music drove our curiosity. In 2018, we started playing music on Twitch and haven’t looked back (thanks, Ohana)!
How would you describe your sound/genre of music?
Our music is the song you’d put on your Tumblr mood board. It’s a fun, ambient blend of indie rock and alternative. Between swelling guitars, choral synths and dreamy melodies and harmonies, we create an introspective soundscape.
Who are some of your biggest inspirations for your sound and storytelling?
We absolutely adore Daughter and Pvris for their lyricism and musicality. As we were starting out singing together in 2013/2014, both bands played a big role in crafting our harmonies and overall sound. For “Clarity” we took inspiration from Lydia’s musicality and cadences.
“Clarity” is one of two new songs you are adding to your November-released album “Hindsight” to create the “Hindsight [dlx].” What made you want to add on to that project all this time later?
“Hindsight” was a collection of songs written between 2019-2025 that, while we’re so proud of, feel disconnected at times from the girls who created those songs. When we got serious about getting the vinyl pressing of “Hindsight [dlx],” it gave us an opportunity to write the epilogue, two more songs that close the chapter of where we were and where we’ve grown to be since releasing Hindsight in November 2025.
What does “Clarity” mean to you and what are you most excited for audiences to experience with this song?
“Clarity” is a deeply personal lesson we’ve had to re-learn. Everything is so deeply uncertain all the time, and it’s important to remember to listen to your intuition. Have grace and respect for the perspective you’ve gained along the journey, and don’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve come. We know it’s all worth it in the end.
With “Clarity,” we’re most excited for audiences to experience familiarity and peace. Between the chill ambient tones and introspective lyrics, there’s something for anyone looking for a new soundtrack to vibe.
You work with many women’s media groups like the Alliance of Women Directors, Women in Film, Women in Media and the Twitch Women’s Guild. Can you tell us a bit about these groups and your work with them?
We love being a part of these women's groups! We’ve been very fortunate to share our work, lead workshops and events and create/attend community events with Alliance of Women Directors, Women in Film, Women in Media and the Twitch Women’s Guild. For women filmmakers, Alliance of Women Directors, Women in Film and Women in Media provide support, events, resources and community. The Twitch Women’s Guild helps provide live broadcasters on Twitch with resources, community and events to help create opportunities.
What advice do you have for other young women who want to break into this challenging industry?
Have the audacity. Find mentors and allies. Take up space.
How do you deal with the pressures and stresses that come with being a woman in the media world?
You have to learn the game so you can break the rules. Fortunately, this is a relationship-based industry, and there have been many incredible women who paved the way for all of us to be sharing and fighting in these spaces. Finding allies and community who celebrate the wins and losses, who turn into friends, are the only way to move forward.
Then, take some time away every couple of weeks. Our bodies and minds need to be fueled so we can continue to create. Our best work only happens when we are full.
It has been a crazy last few years, and we expect at least three more. How do you stay positive in general about the unknown and motivated as an artist?
It’s really easy to be nihilist in this timeline. To help us make sense of the world, we created a philosophy channel, Low Key Philosopher, on Twitch. Each week, we find something that’s relevant in our world and create a 2-hour show, creating a perspective and dialogue around a topic. We’ve covered topics like “Is Ignorance Bliss?,” “Is Rest Helpful?” and “Can We Separate Art From The Artist?” Having an open conversation with dozens of people from around the world has been very helpful in creating perspective and staying optimistic in an otherwise bleak world.
What can we expect next from you short term in your career?
At the end of August, we’re releasing a new song, “Waking Up.” We’ll be re-releasing Hindsight: Deluxe in September with an album release show in Baltimore on September 5. We’re currently rebranding our CA in LA Twitch music stream, writing new music to record, filming music videos and working to release three new short films, “Spicy Monster,” “Hey Dad” and “I’ll Never Lie,” by the end of the year. Hopefully, you’ll catch us live on stage in 2027!
