The Undemocratic Process of Gerrymandering

Over the course of history, gerrymandering has proven to be deeply undemocratic and significantly influential in regards to which party has control over Congress. Gerrymandering helps manufacture election outcomes, creates the illusion of democracy while effectively denying the actual practice of it, and hands the real voting power over to politicians.

The Importance of Saving Public Broadcasting

Federal funding has helped keep public broadcasting stations like NPR, PBS, and several other stations on air for decades. Just recently, the Senate and the House passed a “Recission Act” that will greatly affect this funding. This act is a measure that has the ability to take away money that has already been budgeted by Congress and includes over a billion dollars in funding for public media. With these advances expected to be signed into law very soon by Trump, public broadcasting stations all over the country will take crucial funding hits and, for some, lose the ability to stay on air altogether.

The expansion of Medicaid was one of the most impactful effects of the Affordable Care Act, helping eliminate cost barriers to care and allowing more individuals access to healthcare coverage. With this new healthcare bill being introduced, important parts of the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid will be affected and likely leave millions of Americans without access to healthcare coverage.

Where Does Democracy Go From Here?

The deadly insurrection on Capitol Hill this past January was a direct result of former president Donald Trump’s relentless attack on American Democracy. For two and a half centuries, American presidents have acted as both the head of government (like a prime minister in other regimes) and head of state (like a monarch). During his term in office, Trump took advantage of his power as a quasi-monarch in profoundly disturbing ways. He condoned racism and praised violent groups like the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers. He also used his influence as the highest-ranking official in the country as a way to incite violence against reporters and political foes. On January 6, Congress convened to count the Electoral College votes that would confirm Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States. Simultaneously, Trump encouraged his supporters to threaten our nation’s foundation with intimidation, violence, and anarchy during his "Save America" rally. And they did exactly as instructed.
